The popular outdoor market in Sutton in Ashfield has moved. The market, which operates every Monday, has relocated from Portland Square to a new home in Low Street, next to the Market Place car park near the Costa Coffee store. It will move again next year to its new permanent base, in Fox Street, early next year.

The move has taken place to enable work to begin on the multi-million pound redevelopment of Portland Square and the nearby derelict land in Fox Street.

Work has already started to transform the Fox Street site into the new home of Sutton’s outdoor markets, events, and pop-up markets. The space will also be used as a car park when markets aren’t running.

And next month, work will begin on the Portland Square renovation. The work will see the sundial removed, replacement paving with level access, and two large raised planters featuring mature native trees, grass, ambient lighting, and in-built seating.

Money for the works has come from Ashfield District Council’s £62.6 million Towns Deal.

“The new temporary location for Sutton’s outdoor market will provide increased footfall due to its proximity to our Market Place car park and Idlewells Indoor Market”, John Bennett, the council’s executive director of place, said. “This is a really exciting time as we start to see our plans for Sutton town centre take shape.

“Portland Square and Fox Street developments will give a new lease of life to Sutton, and will complement our plans for Cornerstone Theatre to provide an enhanced cultural and retail offering.”
